I am often asked about the qualities/characteristics that are essential for admission into our MLS program. I usually reply with the list that appears on our Web site:
- Fluency in oral and written communication;
- An assertive personality, one that is sensitive and responsive to the needs of others;
- Emotional maturity and stability;
- An ability to articulate personal goals;
- Intellectual curiosity and flexibility necessary for creative problem solving and application of theory to practice;
- An appreciation for large and small group participation;
- Awareness of change, ambiguity and risk taking;
- A positive attitude toward utilization of technology; and
- Strong interest in contributing to SLIM, the information profession, and to society.
We still do think the above traits will help one be successful in our program, but I would like to turn this around and ask what qualities – as opposed to skills – will enable someone to be successful in our profession?
The reason I ask this question is that I think in our current economic environment – when an agency will often receive hundreds of highly (maybe overly) skilled applicants for a job opening – it is often certain attitudes and personality characteristics that will be the deciding points in the final selection. I also suspect that we do not openly acknowledge or perhaps even realize that we are basing our choice on traits that are so difficult to assess or quantify.
If you are on a search committee, what “qualities” do you look for in an applicant? And how would you try to ascertain these characteristics?

She received her MLS from the University of Hawaii and worked in Hawaii at the University of Hawaii at Hilo and was also branch head of a combined school and public library on the Big Island.



Oh, I like that: what qualities–not skills–are necessary. I probably like it because it follows along the idea that future ready is an ATTITUDE.
Qualities I think are valuable:
Openness — not just to change, which is important, but to connection. Most information professions are now people professions dressed up in some sort of technology/technique costume. Without the ability to connect to others, information professionals are limited.
Curiosity — much of what increasingly happens in the information professional’s world today is figuring out new ways to use stuff we already have. “What if . . .?” “Why not . . .?” “Let’s try . . .” are key phrases in locating new ways to do things.
Non-possessive — whether it’s resources, code, time, space, etc., information professionals know that sharing increases everyone’s power.
In any work environment, it’s important to create a “best product” or “best service.” Making a quality product or service requires input, both positive and negative, on that product/service.
One of the qualities I look when hiring or working with interns and volunteers is the ability of the person to separate themselves from their projects, to be able to accept positive criticism of their work so that the work will become a better product.
Qualities area as necessary as skills, but I think they’re often relegated to second place when considering applicants. But since qualities are not as quantifiable as skills, it can be difficult to identify certain qualities in an interview. An applicant might look great on paper and interview beautifully, but once ensconced in a position and comfortable in their surroundings might have more negative qualities appear – harassment, for example. How do we address these qualities which usually don’t appear during the interview process?
I like these. I also often name curiosity as an important quality for an info pro. I would add my other favorite: good judgment/critical thinking (so much of our work deals with making wise choices).
